Slides stained with hematoxylin and eosin are required, and a paraffin block is highly desirable. If a block cannot be provided, 10 to 12 unstained sections mounted on adhesive slides are recommended. If paraffin blocks are sent, they will be returned without fail immediately upon completion of the consultation.

Submittors can expect a telephone call or FAXed letter giving a diagnostic impression upon initial assessment of the morphologic aspects of the case, and a FAXed final report.

The University of Virginia charges approximately $150 per consultation, in addition to the cost of special adjunctive pathologic studies, if they are necessary.

If a surgical pathology consultation originates outside the state of Virginia, the submitting pathologist or institution will be charged for the consultative services; the University of Virginia Pathology department no longer does direct patient billing for out-of-state cases.
